'The Wonderful metal mirror"
(Aranmula kannadi)

Aranmula is a small village in Kozhancherry thaluk of Pathanamthitta district in south Kerala. The nearest railway station is Chenganoor, which is 10 kms away from here.Aranmula is now very famous because of the famous "Nehru trophy boat race" in chundan vallangal (in snake like small boats). This race is usually being conducting during the Onam season.Another peculiarity is its metal mirror which is commonly known as "Aranmula KKannadi".It is a unique metal mirror.this marvelous piece of ancient metallurgy gives distortion free images. Some undisclosed metals are alloyed with copper and tin to case in typical clay moulds. The craftsman melts this metals in a pit - furnace fitted with a manual blower and pours it into clay moulds of different sizes. the moulded metal disc will be mounted on a wooden plank to polish.Fine powder of burnt clay and caster oil with jute cloth are using to polish it.this polished discs are mounted on bronze frames with exquisite carvings. At least two weeks are needed for this process to create a dozen metal mirrors. The smallest one of the finished metal mirror will cost 60 US $ (2500Rupees).
There are only seven families of artisans, who are engaged in the creation of metal mirror. The ever increasing demand for this unique metal mirror itself shows its growing popularity among the natives as well as the foreigners. Its technical know-how is limited to this seven families and they are hesitant to transfer it to the next generation. So the demand is greater than its supply in the market.
There is a legend behind this "Aranmula kkannadi".Centuries ago, the local king of Aranmula decided to renovate the nearby Sree Parthasarathy temple. He brought eight bronze-smith families from the then Tamil nadu for the same. After the renovation these families did not go back to their home land in Tamil Nadu. They became lazy and were public nuisance. The king got ire towards them and ordered to evict them from Aranmula. Then all of the eight families assembled and thought about saving from the ire of the king. All of them together begun to create a new unique crown which is marvelous and reflective. The king was pleased on the gift given them.He in turn gave them land and jewels. All of them settled in Aranmula and they are the creaters of this unique metal mirror "Aranmula KKannadi".
